Dr. Daniel Scherz – Keynote speaker
for sustainable construction and future-proof cities
Sustainable construction is ineffective, too expensive and too demanding?
We’ve all heard these arguments before. In my keynotes, I show that the exact opposite is true. I take the audience on a journey into the world of sustainable construction, dispel myths and prejudices in a humorous way and explain the contexts in an easy-to-understand manner.
What can the audience expect?
With my professional background, I always offer a technically sound overview of sustainable construction with illustrative information from research and practice. But above all, I provide a motivating outlook on the opportunities and potential for the construction industry, with a wide range of suggestions for implementation and inspire to think outside the box.

The lecture topics
Sustainable construction

Everywhere we read about the need for “change”. We need a building turnaround, an energy turnaround, a transport turnaround and an economic turnaround. But what does this mean for our existing and future buildings? What do we need to adapt to? What are the technologies and strategies that will make this possible? Where should we rethink? And in which areas within the construction industry can we take immediate action? This keynote speech will take us from the ‘why’ we need change, to the ‘what’ this means specifically for the construction sector, to the “how” we can implement it and benefit from it.

What
is the aim of the keynote?
There are extremely convincing reasons to build sustainably. From climate protection, strategic and economic advantages to the creation of an environment worth living in. And once you have shed some light on the technological requirements, specifications and framework conditions as well as the diverse, sometimes conflicting opinions, it becomes clear that many reservations are unfounded and that getting started is not as difficult as you might think. The aim of this keynote speech is therefore firstly to clarify the importance of the construction industry for a sustainable economy and way of life, then to answer the question of what constitutes sustainable buildings and which possibilities and strategies are significant and finally to highlight the associated opportunities – for everyone involved in construction.
There is not the optimal building or the optimal solution. Building is multifaceted. We find different challenges in existing buildings than in new builds, and a commercial building has different requirements than a residential building. Nevertheless, there are some basic strategies and concepts that underlie every sustainable building and some structural and technical solutions that work well in most cases. In the keynote, I will address these topics and answer the following questions, among others:
• What does building have to do with climate change?
• What role does the need for ressources play?
• Why do we find it so difficult to change?
• How to insulate – and is it even important?
• How to heat and cool – and why regenerative?
• What does „circular economy“ mean for construction?
• What influence do local and EU regulations have?
• Is all this even affordable?
• How can the construction industry benefit from it?
• How can you make a sustainable start?

If you are planning an event for which this keynote speech would be suitable, please contact me and we will work out together what the ideal presentation structure for your event could look like. Depending on the event objective, target group and desired duration, I will adapt the presentation and the individual topics accordingly and we will finalize them. In my tried-and-tested structure with the introductory information section and the concluding motivational section, individual topics can be accentuated or deepened so that the keynote always fits your individual needs.
Well then, let’s talk:
Future city

Our cities should be sustainable, climate-friendly, resilient and environmental friendly. Quite a lot of requirements that also need to be taken into account as quickly as possible. It is obvious that “business as usual” will not do justice to any of these issues. But what exactly should we change, what ideas, strategies and pioneering examples are available for our cities and what does the future of the city look like? In this keynote speech, I will discuss what the further development of our cities can look like in terms of buildings, transportation and open spaces, what our levers are and why these cities will be particularly liveable.

What
is the aim of the keynote?
Our cities should fulfill many functions equally: Provide sufficient and affordable living space, enable smooth mobility for all residents, provide comprehensive public and private facilities and include attractive green spaces and leisure options. And all this in a climate-friendly way and prepared for the future climate change. This keynote shows how all of this can be achieved at the same time through the transformation towards sustainable cities. After looking at the importance of our cities for a sustainable way of life, strategies and examples will be presented and the benefits and opportunities will be explained – for the construction industry, for residents and for society.
The diverse demands placed on a modern city sometimes even seem to contradict each other. We want to be able to get to any point in the city as individually as possible and without restrictions, while still having plenty of space for living, leisure and greenery. And at the same time we know that the available space in our cities is limited. So what can we do? I will show you what is possible and answer the following questions, among others:
• What does urban development have to do with climate change?
• What role does the need for ressources play?
• Why do we find it so difficult to change?
• Do we need the 15-minuten city?
• What does sustainable mobility look like?
• What is necessary for climate adaption?
• What does the energy supply look like?
• Why circular economy, sharing und city-greenery?
• Is that even affordable?
• How can the construction industry benefit from it?
• How can you make a sustainable start?

Who is Daniel Scherz?

Sailor, traveler, city fan, nature lover and passionate environmental designer
Born in Munich in Bavaria, grown up in the Ruhr metropolitan region in Essen and since many years living in the northern German port city of Hamburg I have always lived in big cities with all their fascination, opportunities and challenges. And I asked myself early on how they could be further developed and adapted to new needs. During my architecture studies, I also realized that we need a paradigm shift towards a sustainable way of life – and that there is great potential for this in the construction industry. Since then, architecture, urban planning and sustainability have been inextricably linked for me. That is why I have seeked to integrate the topic into everyday work in all my professional stations, be it in university research on energy-efficient renovation, architectural planning and consulting mandates or in the managing role as a project developer for sustainable real estate and neighborhoods. And I discovered what a joy it is to share my experiences and my motivation – which I have been doing for many years as a speaker in a national and international context.
